In 1982, Olivia was host for the season finale of Saturday Night Live and performed live three songs.
She also starred in two comedy sketches, one in which she reprises her Sandy role (the sexy black-clad Sandy at the end of Grease). If this role is anything to go by Sandy didn't turn out very nice after her transformation! But Olivia looks wonderful in the very similar outfit that she last wore 4 years before in the movie.
Her live renditions of Physical, Make A Move On Me and Landslide are a delight.
In 1966 Olivia Newton-John starred in her first film - Funny Things Happen Down Under. Made by Pacific Films in Melbourne, Australia (now defunct) this one hour film was a comedy/musical aimed at children.
Olivia did not have a large part in the film but sang one song "Christmas Time Down Under" (not available on any record release). She can be seen in the background throughout the movie contributing several lines.
The basic storyline is about a group of children who, unless they can come up with £200 before Christmas day, stand to loose the wool shed that they play in. Whilst trying to earn this money they accidentally discover a mystery formula that turns sheep's wool different colours. The children try to sell this formula to some foreign wool buyers and this leads to some slapstick, rather predictable, comedy scenes. However, in the end two young men save the day by winning the local sheep shearing contest and donating their prize money (£200) to the children.
A collection of Olivia's videos mainly from her 1981 album Physical. Brian Grant directed these innovative musical videos, this was pre-MTV and won the 1982 Grammy for best video. Said to cost half a million dollars to produce, it was filmed in California (at Olivia's house), London and Hawaii. It boasted 35 per cent of the US viewing audience when it first aired.
It certain is wonderful - Olivia looks and sounds great. It was a bit of a shock for many after Olivia's "girl next door" image but Olivia clearly takes some pleasure from this. The videos to Strangers Touch, Recovery and Silvery Rain are of special note.
The TV version and the version released on home VHS are different. The TV version contains a few sketches with Olivia around her Malibu ranch.
Olivia's Japanese tour in 1976 was screened on Japanese TV.
The Japanese audience are very appreciative of Olivia and shout greetings to her between songs. Olivia isn't sure how to react to their enthusiasm. She thrills them all at the end of the concert when she says I Honestly Love You in Japanese.
John Farrar accompanies Olivia on stage playing guitar.
