Tetsuko Room (1990)

tr01

On Olivia's visit to Japan to promote her Warm & Tender album she gave this TV interview about the environment. The questions are asked in Japanese but Olivia gives her answers in English which are then translated for the TV audience. This can become a little tedious for non-Japanese speakers but it's nice that Olivia's answers aren't dubbed over.

As usual Olivia is as passionate about protecting the earth and talks through some of the tips on the sleeve of her Warm and Tender album. Her lack of scientific knowledge occasionally shows through but her enthusiasm for the subject more than makes up for this.

Olivia mentions the Japanese tour in 1978 that she cancelled in protest of the Japanese fishers slaughtering dolphins. She is continuing this fight for dolphins today but this time she's protesting about the way tuna is caught all over the world, with many dolphins being needlessly slaughtered in the nets. Thankfully, now over 10 years later, dolphin-friendly tuna is readily available on supermarket shelves.

Olivia believes that once a person starts doing just one thing to help protect the environment then their eyes open and they automatically do more. It just takes that first step. She even offers a tip especially for the Japanese - take your own chopsticks to restaurants and help save trees.

Headliners & Legends (2000.08.24)

msnbc01

Matt Lauer of "Headliners & Legends" brings fans a unique and in-depth coverage of Olivia's career and life to date. With contributions from Olivia herself plus Chloe, Nancy Chuda, Pat and John Farrar, Olivia's mom, sister Rona and two members of Olivia's first group The Sol Four.

The program has excellent coverage of her early years in Australia and England. Many black and white clips are dug out of Network Seven's archives. Olivia treats us to a verse of the very first song she wrote "Why oh why did you go away?" about the pain of her parent's divorce.

Pat Farrar reveals that it was she in the early years who had all the ambition and Olivia came along just for the fun. Pat admits to pangs when it was Olivia's career that took off whilst she had to return Australia. John Farrar expresses his surprise at their success in America, he'd only ever expected to have hits in England.

For the first time Olivia publicly discusses (briefly) ex-boyfriend Lee Kramer who was also Olivia's manager in the 70s. This caused their relationship to be "too close, too intense". But meeting Matt was a chance to experience the childhood she'd never had due to her career - going fishing, hiking and camping together. Delightful home camcorder footage of Matt and young Chloe is shown.

The program highlights the tragic events of the early 90s which Olivia encountered. The death of Colette Chuda was like loosing Olivia's own child  and of fears during the first chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. These are events none of us would ever wish to experience and the program deals with them sensitively.

After the in-depth coverage of the early years, the 80s and 90s  are a little patchy career-wise as Olivia's personal life comes to the forefront. However, we're treated to wonderful scenes from Sordid Lives and a quick peak at Olivia cutting her own hair for the role!

The program ends with Olivia wishing health and happiness for her daughter and for herself health and more of the peace she's finding.

The Cliff Richard Story (2000.10.10)

crs01

Olivia was interviewed for this ITV documentary about Cliff Richard on the eve of his 60th birthday. She was on screen for around 4 minutes and they showed footage of Getaway With Cliff, the first TV special Olivia and Cliff appeared in together.

Interviewed in a hotel room for the special Olivia denied that they had ever dated and complimented Cliff on his very genuine nature - "he is who he is. There's no other side to Cliff."

Olivia even hinted that they may have even got a bit tipsy together - having enjoyed a glass of wine together and had fun! One of her birthday gifts to Cliff will be a framed photo of them together from the early days - in an amusing pose.

Olivia revealed, along with most of Cliff's other female friends, that her favorite Cliff song is Miss You Nights.

The special ended with Cliff receiving a huge birthday card signed by all his friends. On seeing Olivia's message he said "my lovely Olivia is here".

A great documentary featuring contributions from many of Olivia's friends. Fox News In The Morning (2001.05.10)

fox01

Olivia and Kelly Preston were interviewed live from Washington, DC for Fox News. They were in Washington having just given a presentation to the Congress for CHEC's "right to know" product labelling campaign.

Olivia was eager to introduce Nanacy Chuda, who Fox it seems weren't planning to interview. Olivia, who must have  realized that this would have been a missed opportunity for CHEC, made sure she was included. Olivia and Kelly both promoted CHEC's educational video whilst Nancy spoke more in-depth about CHEC's aims.

An amusing moment came when the interview was running out of time and the presenter was winding it up. Olivia hurriedly shouted (twice) get the video from checnet.org - she was concerned that people may not know where to obtain it from. However, she needn't have worried as at the end Fox put CHEC's website and phone number up on the screen.

Ralph Emery On The Record (1998.04.15)

tnn01

To promote her new album Back With A Heart and the re-release of Grease country music veteran Ralph Emery interviewed Olivia in front of a live audience in Nashville.

They discussed the phenomenon of Grease - Olivia has kept the black trousers, the leather jacket and her Pink Lady jacket from the movie but gave the infamous red shoes to a charity auction some years ago. Ralph and Olivia agreed that it was "strange" that her $125,000 salary for the movie was public knowledge. Ralph Emery with Olivia

One of her first radio interviews in the early 70s was with Ralph during which Olivia told him that she wanted to teach America how to make a proper cup of tea. Olivia then tells us just how to do that whilst making light-hearted fun of the British who have to make their tea just so!

A rare clip is shown of Olivia's acception speech for her controversial 1974 CMA Award. She was in London at the time so she'd recorded a videoclip.

tnn02 tnn03

Her duet with the Raybon Bros - Falling is discussed. Producer Tony Brown asked Olivia to record this and she was given the song at 5pm needing to be in the recording studio just 3 hours later at 8pm. Despite the tight schedule the song turned out great!

Ralph asks Olivia about her new album BWAH. He considers it strange that 6 different producers were used for the album. Olivia said that this meant the album could be completed quickly, if only one producer had been used it may have taken 9-12 months to get the mix right. She also said working with different producers gave the songs different flavors.

On replying why she'd recorded a country album Olivia said that country was her roots, where she'd begun. Pop music today wasn't where she was but that she could relate to country music as it's more about the song and singer.

A nice interview with some interesting insights into Olivia's career but with a large concentration on her recovery from breast cancer.
